The Chinese Bonsai Internet

A flurry of reports have come out about the decrease in websites in China last year. Some 1.4 million websites were shuttered due to government regulations (read: censorship). Apparently, websites in China decreased last year by some 40%, while globally the number of websites continue to increase.
In NPR’s coverage of the Chinese site decrease they compared the Internet to a bonsai tree, while it experiences growth it requires trimming/maintenance. I’m almost positive this site would be shut down with the mere mention of “democracy” in another blog post.
